Rev. Hilliard at Pastors' Conference in Cuba

04.03.20 | Faces of First Pres

At the end of January 2020, Rev. Hilliard and a member of the mission committee, Kara Kress, traveled to Havana, Cuba for a meeting with mission leaders from churches in the United States and pastors from the New Pines Churches in Cuba. First Presbyterian Church has been partnering with the New Pines churches in the city of Cienfuegos and the city of Trinidad. Our partnership includes support for the pastor’s salary, ministry expenses of training leaders and printing of materials, renovation of existing buildings as needed and a future purchase of a farm which can generate revenue and provide food for the communities that each church serves. Pastor Erisbel from Cienfuegos and Pastor Hernan from Trinidad were both at the gathering in Havana and it was a joy to meet with them. They are not only partners in ministry but they are good friends of First Pres!

The New Pines churches have a vision goal of establishing 10 key churches in the 10 largest cities in Cuba. Each key church will train leaders who will lead house churches in the communities surrounding their city. And each key church will eventually have a farm to provide a source of income. It is a big vision and New Pines currently has established key churches in six of the largest cities.

They convened at the New Pines Church which is located near the capitol building in Havana. During this time together, the U.S. mission leaders and New Pines pastors and leaders prayed together, shared ministry highlights, and shared about future hopes and dreams for how the Kingdom might be advanced in Cuba. It was a time of great encouragement as brothers and sisters came together as partners in ministry. Please pray for the church in Cuba and for God to continue to change hearts and lives.
