Rooted To Flourish: A 2023 Stewardship Initiative
Stewardship season is a time for each of us to consider the part we play in the flourishing of God’s Kingdom by how we invest our time, talent and treasure in what God is doing at First Presbyterian Church and in the world. It is a time of recognition and celebration of the work that has been done to root and plant First Pres in North Palm Beach. It is when we provide the vision of how we plan to flourish in the future and impact the world for Christ. It is also when we invite our congregation to participate in our fruitful next chapter.
We are seeking pledges for our 2023 Stewardship Initiative: Rooted To Flourish. This initiative is designed to fulfill First Presbyterian Church's mission to equip people to pursue and share gospel driven lives.
"As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving."
As a congregation, our members/covenant partners love the Lord. First Presbyterian Church desires to deepen the roots of their faith through its teaching at the pulpit, in Sunday School classes and small groups. This is our mission: to equip people to pursue and share gospel-driven lives.
As a church, First Pres has been rooted and stands on a firm foundation that began 60 years ago. It began as a group of young families in North Palm Beach and now has over 650 families that consider First Pres their church home from all of the surrounding communities.
“The righteous flourish like the palm tree and flow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.”
First Pres has always followed Jesus’ command to go into the world and make disciples of all nations. We planted our first daughter church in West Palm Beach and have assisted with local church plants in Port St. Lucie, Palm City and Riviera Beach and global church plants in Germany, Greece, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Cuba and North Africa. Every year First Pres invests more than $100,000 and countless volunteer hours, partnering with local ministries to care for the poor, homeless, incarcerated, rehabilitators, babies and single mothers – assisting with their physical needs and showing the love of Christ to them. We also invest more than $200,000 annually to support our global mission partners working in the 10/40 window and justice ministries, along with missions involving evangelism, discipleship and care for the poor. The impact of all these ministries is felt around the globe.
First Pres is also flourishing in the local community. New people have been attending every week with some inquiring how to get involved or join and others coming to find answers about who Jesus is. Out of the desire for community and growth over time came the First Pres Preschool, children and student ministries, Agape and Front Porch Sunday Schools and, more recently, small groups which launched in 2021. At this time, First Pres began creating a comprehensive community life structure via developing a church-wide small group system. A self-functioning small group system helps a church to flourish as connecting people in smaller communities in which they develop lasting relationships is a primary way to multiply the church’s imprint and impact.
We have been learning how to share our faith through seminars. We reflect the love of Christ by holding community events, such as the Easter Eggstravaganza, Christmas Fest, Vacation Bible School, Music Camp, and Sons of BBQ cookouts. We have expanded our outreach through incorporating livestream worship which has allowed us to stay connected to our seasonal community members, those in isolation, and give new guests a first taste of the Church. We also invest in the lives of young adults through our college and seminary intern program and in developing leaders within our Church.
“In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
From a single root, God has grown a flourishing tree which has been bearing fruit for six decades, but we are not done yet. We will continue to preach the truth of God’s Word and show the love of Christ until the whole world knows.
We are working on adopting a culture of hospitality with a “guest first” mindset throughout the campus and Sunday programming to welcome newcomers and non-Christians winsomely and effectively. We want to have a vibrant church hub for generations and cultures, to be a church “gathered” and “scattered” throughout Palm Beach County, to be a “teaching hospital” for developing leaders and to continue to plant churches in South Florida and the world.
If you are not currently serving in the Church, ask how you can volunteer based on your talents and abilities by completing a Connection Card or calling the Church. If you are not part of a small group, join one next semester. Prayerfully consider what financial support you can provide to First Pres through the giving of tithes and offerings.
2 Corinthians 9:7 - "You must decide in your own heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’”
As a practical matter, it is worth sharing that the general operating expenses of the church are expected to be $2,150,000 in the year ahead. This funding is critical as we seek to continue the wonderful programs and services provided to the local community. We also hope to invest $250,000 in global missions, $100,000 in local church planting, and another $100,000 in capital improvements to our church home.
